Doug Stotz, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you here
tonight, along with your friend, classmate and teammate, Bill
Saimond, to induct you into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
I'm sure the memories are still fresh in your mind of campus
life-which included a cinder track, the crisp air of the spring
season, and the commanding voice of your head coach, Merl Norcross.
How appropriate it is that you are being inducted into his
prestigious organization with both Bill and Merl present tonight, a
little more than 40 years after those seasons of glory.
Merl Norcross, now coach emeritus of track and field, noted how
this duo "represented the best of that era. If Bill won a race, you
could almost bet that Doug would win the next one, and vice versa."
You were a four-year letter-winner in track and field. You led
your team as a junior in scoring with 40 points. As a senior, you
were second on your team in scoring with 44 points behind a fellow
named Saimond.
You ran the 100 and the 220. It was in your senior year that you
achieved greatness at the Easterns by wining the 220, and then by
finishing third in the 100.
Today, you are a semi-retired electrical contractor, living in
Greenfield, Mass.
Your determination and the positiveness you created always
worked heavily in your favor. Producing victory after victory-that
will be your legacy.
Doug Stotz, for your gift and your never-ending will to win, it
is with great pride that we welcome you into the WPI Athletic Hall
of Fame.
