Paul Wyman, it is no secret that you are one of the very best
wrestlers ever to grace the halls of WPI's Alumni Gym. So says your
head coach, Phil Grebinar, who is entering his 30th year at the
helm in this academic year.
Your list of credentials is long and distinguished. You wrestled
here at WPI from 1981 through 1985, mainly as a 158-pounder. Not
only were you a four-year letter-winner, you were also a three-time
All-New England player.
Your career at WPI culminated with a spectacular season in
1984-85, at both individual and team level. You led WPI to an
NECCWA Championship, representing the best of New England. That
team finished 20-1, still the best in WPI history. It also
accumulated the most points during an NECCWA championship. As an
individual, you won the 158-pound NECCWA title, and went on to
achieve your sport's highest status, NCAA All-American.
You have certainly left a solid mark on the WPI record books.
Your name still appears with regularity. Despite a list of truly
great individuals who have since competed, you are still ranked
fourth in career wins with 49, third in takedowns in a single
season with 56, and second in career takedowns with 155.
But your wrestling career did not stop there. In 1986, you
became a Massachusetts Bay State Games Freestyle Wrestling
Champion. Then in 1991, you were a member of the U.S. National
"Regional" Freestyle Wrestling Team.
From 1987 through 1997, you helped Coach Grebinar as an
assistant here at WPI. Those years proudly produced two more New
England championship teams, five All-Americans, 13 New England
Championships and 71 All-New England performers.
Today you are vice president of sales for a software company in
British Columbia, and reside in Texas.
Paul Wyman, for your outstanding achievements in the sport of
wrestling, including All-America status, it is an honor to induct
you into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
