Of all the great soccer players to take the field at WPI, Greg
Tucker has the distinction of being the top scorer in school
history. Amassing 49 career goals and 29 assists while racking up
127 points for the Engineers, his point totals increased each
season, with the team's win total following suit.
Greg began his standout career in 1988 under legendary Hall of
Fame coach Alan King. He collected four goals and added five
assists in his freshman year. During a 9-5-1 sophomore season in
1989, he led the team with 21 points and was a key contributor to
the Engineers rebounding from a 2-3 start to sport an eight-game
win streak that included wins over RPI and Brandeis.
He powered a high-octane offense in 1990, as he once again paced
the team with 16 goals and seven assists. His junior season marked
the first of two times that he was named first team
All-Constitution Athletic Conference and All-New-England.
Like many great athletes, Greg saved his best season for last.
In his senior season of 1991, he topped the Crimson and Gray with
21 goals, 12 assists and 54 points. In Coach King's final season at
WPI, the team went 13-4-2, setting the school record for wins in a
season (only to be surpassed by the 2002 team). The Engineers made
a memorable run in the Constitution Athletic Conference tournament,
defeating MIT in overtime in the semifinals before avenging a
regular season loss to Babson in the championship match.
WPI earned the second seed in the ECAC championships before
falling to Connecticut College. For his efforts, Greg was named CAC
Player of the Year and third team NSCAA All- American.
"Greg was the most gifted athlete I was associated with at WPI,
with absolutely no ego," says assistant coach and Hall of Famer
Whit Griffith. "All of our opponents were well aware of his talent.
Their defense reflected this and he still scored."
While at WPI, Greg received the Varsity Club Award and the Poly
Club Award (which recognizes one junior for excellence in
academics, athletics and campus involvement). He was president of
his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, and a member of Skull.
Greg graduated in 1992 with a BS in mechanical engineering. He
still holds the school record for career goals scored (49) and
points amassed (127). His senior year total of 21 goals is still
second all-time.
He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of TSI Group Inc. He
still plays soccer and runs the Youth Oyster River Soccer Leagues.
He and his wife, Corinna, have three children; the family lives in
Lee, New Hampshire.
