Fitchburg, MA --- Senior guard Ryan Cain
(Webster, MA) poured in a game-high 21 points to help Worcester
Polytechnic Institute down host Fitchburg State, 74-54, Saturday in
a non-conference contest.
The visiting Engineers, who improved to 5-1 with the victory, also
got 14 points, two steals and six boards from junior center
Jim Marois (Worcester, MA) while sophomore guard
Jerome Kirkland (Boston, MA) chipped in seven
points off the bench. But Cain was the story, shooting 7-of-12 from
the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe while contributing
four assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Adam
Lirette (Dover, NH) came away with seven steals and four
rebounds to go along with four points.
Fitchburg (0-6) took its only lead of the second half early when
junior swingman Brian Torres (North Dighton, MA)
canned a three-pointer to give the hosts a 32-31 advantage with
19:10 remaining in the game. Torres finished with a team-high 20
points, shooting 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
WPI would pull away after that bucket, venturing on a 22-6 run led
by junior forward Antoine Coleman (Everett, MA),
who scored all six of his points, grabbed two rebounds and dished
out an assist during the run.
FSC sophomore guard Jeff Kozik (Auburn, MA) added
11 points and four rebounds in the loss while sophomore center
Andrew Vayo (Waterville, ME) put home nine points
added pulled down six rebounds (4 offensive). Junior guard
Matt Collins (Southington, MA) scored three points
and added five assists in the loss.
Fitchburg will look to get back on track Thursday when it hosts
Clark (7:00 pm) while the Engineers host Endicott Thursday night
(7:00 pm).
