WPI 1, Babson 1 2OT
Box Score
Babson Park, MA -- The Babson College Beavers and the visiting
WPI Engineers played to a 1-1 tie in a New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer contest at
Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday. It was the first conference game
of the season for both squads
Babson (5-0-2, 0-0-1 NEWMAC) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when
senior tri-captain Cailtin Cronin (Hanover, MA)
placed a feed from junior Callie Pilling (Dalton,
MA) into the lower left corner just 6:15 into the contest. The
Beavers went on to dominate play for the remainder of the half,
building a 9-1 shot advantage by the break.
Babson continued to control the contest throughout the second half,
but WPI (3-4-1, 0-0-1 NEWMAC) took advantage of just their second
strong scoring chance of the game when first-year Krista
Baker (Medway, MA) hit a perfect through-ball to sophomore
Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA). Moody then
put a shot past charging first-year goalie Sam
Scarpato (Weston, MA) and into the upper right corner to
tie the contest at 1-1 at 68:24.
Bolstered by the momentum swing, the Engineers had the two best
chances in overtime, both coming in the final eight minutes of
play. First-year Kelsey Mawhiney (Johnston, RI)
had the first chance when she ripped a shot just outside the left
post with 7:10 left in the second OT, and Moody had another
opportunity when her shot from the right side of the box was
stopped by a diving Scarpato with two minutes remaining.
Scarpato finished with four saves in net for Babson, while
first-year Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA)
turned away seven shots in goal for WPI.
