Providence, RI --- The Johnson & Wales University women's
basketball team dropped a 64-49 decision against Worcester
Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference game at the Harborside
RAC on Thursday evening.
Senior Meghan Pajonas (Bristol, CT) scored a
career high 26 points, including a perfect 12-of-12 from the free
throw line, to pace WPI in the victory. Sophomore Michele
Perry (Pelham, NH) was also in double figures for the
Engineers with 10 points while grabbing six boards.
Freshman Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, CA) led the
way Johnson & Wales, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and
four steals. Sophomore Shannon Hunter (Thoreau,
NM) and sophomore Alyse Ragaglia (West Newbury,
MA) added 10 points each in the setback for the Wildcats.
The two teams traded baskets early on in the contest with the
score 16-13 in favor of WPI after a layup by Ramirez midway through
the first half. A run by the visiting Engineers in the closing
minutes of the first half gave the squad a 34-24 lead heading into
the locker room at halftime.
WPI grew their lead to 15 in the early stages of the second half
and went ahead 20 (62-42) after a pair of free throws by sophomore
Caitlin Macko (Cromwell, CT) with 3:19 left on the
contest. The Engineers then cruised to the 64-49 victory.
Johnson & Wales is now 4-7 on the year while WPI improves to
7-4 for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday,
January 6th when they host Westfield State in a non-conference
contest starting at 1pm. WPI also returns to the court on Saturday
as they open NEWMAC play with a home date versus three-time
defending champion Springfield at 1pm.
