Fitchburg, MA --- Senior forward Diana
Doyle (Springfield, MA) netted a team-best 22 points to
lead Fitchburg State College to a 66-60 victory over WPI in a
non-conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at
FSC's Recreation Center.
The Falcons jumped out to a 31-22 halftime cushion on the
strength of Doyle's 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two
steals, but the Engineers clawed their way back into the contest
with an 11-0 run that made the score 39-37 FSC with 10:27 to play
in regulation. However, the hosts regrouped to open up a 62-47
cushion with 1:32 left in the game.
Fitchburg improved to 4-1 overall while WPI fell to 1-3 overall
despite receiving career-highs in points from Serena
Dubois (Bangor, ME), Kaileen Salen
(Worcester, MA), and Kate Maki (Fitchburg, MA).
Selen netted a game-high 23 points to go along with five rebounds,
while Dubois added a double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds) and
Maki put home 13 points and added three steals.
Fitchburg State worked its way out to a 19-9 lead with 6:24 to
play in the first and capped the half with a 31-22 cushion,
limiting the visitors to 22 percent shooting while maintaining a 44
percent shooting percentage. For the afternoon, the Engineers shot
25 percent from the floor but were able to stay in the game on the
strength of 15-of-19 shooting from the free throw line in the
second half (23-34 for the game). The Falcons meanwhile, shot 39
percent from the floor.
In the second half, Selen guided the Engineers back, scoring
eight points, including a conventional three-point play and
three-pointer, in an 11-0 run that brought WPI back to within two
points at 39-37 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Senior forward Steph Payette (Townsend, MA)
helped settle Fitchburg down after the WPI run and guided the
Falcons on a mini 8-2 run with six points, a steal and an offensive
board for a 47-40 cushion with 6:35 remaining. Payette finished
with 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
Senior forward Merry Donovan (Milton, MA) was the
only other Falcon in double digits, scoring 12 points, with four
rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Fitchburg State will host WNEC Wednesday night (7pm) while the
WPI takes on Brandeis on Tuesday night (7pm) in its home
opener.
