Worcester, MA --- WPI connected on nine of its first 13 3-point
attempts and senior preseason All-American Antoine
Coleman (Everett, MA) tallied 13 points to reach the 1,000
career point milestone as WPI defeated previously unbeaten
Fitchburg State 105-67 in non-conference men's basketball action on
Sunday afternoon. The Engineers are now 5-2 on the young season
while FSC slips to 4-1.
Center Ryan Bourque (Nashua, NH) connected on
all five of his field goal attempts, including a pair of
3-pointers, while tallying all 14 of his points in the first
half. As a team, the Engineers drained 20-of-29 (69.0%) first
half attempts from the field as they took a 54-33 advantage into
the locker room at the intermission.
Jim Marois (Worcester, MA) paced all scorers
with 19 points while Jerome Kirkland (Boston, MA)
and NT Izuchi (Boston, MA) netted 13 and 12 points
respectively for the Engineers. In addition to reaching the
1,000 point mark, Coleman dished out a career-best five assists on
the afternoon. Adam Lirette (Dover, NH) led
all players with eight assists on the day.
The 105 points were the most by the Crimson and Gray since they
poured in 106 versus MIT in February of 1994. The Engineers
has now registered 100 or more points three times in seven games
which is the most ever in a single season.
Tim Graham (Arlington, MA) was solid for
Fitchburg State, notching 10 of his team-high 13 points in the
first half. Brian Torres (Dighton, MA) added
10 points for the Falcons, who entered the game with a 4-0 mark,
their best start in 16 years.
WPI will play its final contest before the Christmas holiday
when they travel to UMass-Boston for a 7:30pm game on
Tuesday. Fitchburg State returns on the court on Thursday
with a 7pm road match-up at Becker.
