Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Serena Dubois
(Bangor, ME) had a career-high 18 points and tied a career-best 15
rebounds to lead the WPI women's basketball team to a 68-54 victory
over Wesley College in the opening game of the eighth annual WPI
Invitational presented by Hilton Garden Inn.
WPI (3-4) led by as many as 11 (20-9) on a lay-up by Dubois at
the 11:39 mark of the first half. Stephanie
Bailey's (Kensington, MD) jumper capped a 9-4 run to bring
Wesley within four (20-24). The two teams traded baskets over
the next 3:29 until Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA)
drained a deep three to stifle the visitors' momentum and give WPI
a 32-23 advantage. The hosts went on to take an eight point
edge (33-25) into the break.
Selen sparked the Engineers offense in the opening seconds of
the second frame with a dagger trey for a 36-25 lead. WPI went on
an 8-4 stretch highlighted by three-pointers from Caitlin
Macko (Cromwell, CT and Kate Maki
(Fitchburg, MA) to lead by 13 (45-32) with 12:30 left.
Wesley made it interesting after a three from Bailey closed the
gap to five (44-49), but WPI outscored the visitors 15-8 over a
4:30 span to put the game out of reach.
Macko and Selen finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively,
for WPI. Colleen Thomas (Howell, NJ) led
Wesley (4-5) with 12 points while Bailey chipped in with 11
points.
WPI advances to Monday's championship game where they will face
the winner of the Keene State College/Curry College game at
3pm. Wesley will take part in the consolation contest Monday
at 1pm.
