Boston, MA --- Caitlin Macko (Cromwell, CT) hit
a free throw with two seconds remaining to seal a 48-44 victory for
WPI (2-4) over Emerson College (3-3) in a non-conference contest.
The Engineers had seen a seven-point lead evaporate to 47-44 on a
lay-up by Kathy Andrade (Hull, MA) with nine
seconds remaining.
The game was close throughout with WPI holding a 20-19 halftime
edge. The game was tied eight times in the first half, but the last
lead Emerson could forge was 8-6.
The Lions took a 21-20 lead to begin the second half on a lay-up
by Lauren Vassallo (Oxford, CT). WPI then scored
the next six points on a jumper by Macko, a lay-up by
Brittany McNally (Burrillville, RI), and a lay-up
by Rachel Salvatori (Williston , VT). The Lions
again pulled to within a single point with 11:17 remaining on a
lay-up by Lindsay DeStefano (Glocester, RI), but
WPI scored the game's next nine points for a lead the Engineers
would not relinquish.
The game was sloppy throughout the contest as each team committed
21 turnovers. The Engineers shot 34% from the field for the game
while Emerson shot only 30%. Neither team made a three-point shot
on 17 combined attempts.
Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA) was the leading
scorer for WPI with 12 points with Macko adding 10, which included
eight baskets in the second half. Senior Kate Maki
(Fitchburg, MA) also chipped in with eight points while pulling
down a team-high eight rebounds.
Vassallo netted 13 for Emerson while Andrade also reached double
figures with 10.
The Engineers take a break until December 30 when play host Wesley
College in the first round of the WPI Tournament at 1pm. Emerson
will play at Endicott at 7pm Wednesday.
