Worcester, MA --- Lone WPI senior Meghan
Pajonas (Bristol, CT) registered game-bests of 18 points
and 10 rebounds to help the Engineers defeat visiting Wellesley
59-42 in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Senior Day on Saturday
afternoon. With the victory, WPI wins its first ever NEWMAC regular
season championship and earns the number one seed in next week's
conference tournament.
Pajonas, who notched her seventh double-double of the season, and
fifth in the last seven games, canned 8-of-12 field goals attempts
while adding a pair of blocks and two steals. Her 18 points push
her career total to 1,017.
The Engineers, who never trailed in the contest, forced 29
turnovers and parlayed them into 25 points. Kaileen
Selen (Worcester, MA) paced the defensive effort with a
career-best nine steals to go along with 11 points. Caitlin
Macko (Cromwell, CT) chipped in with 11 points and
Kate Maki (Fitchburg, MA) and Amber
Dangelo (West Kingston, RI) each added six.
The Engineers, who are now 18-6 on the season and finished 11-2 in
conference play, have won their last five NEWMAC games and 15 of
their last 17 games overall. The Crimson and Gray will host
Saturday's MIT at Smith winner at 7pm on Wednesday in a NEWMAC
Tournament first round contest. If WPI wins, it will host the
semifinals and finals next weekend at Harrington Auditorium.
Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) paced
Wellesley (4-19, 1-12 NEWMAC) with 15 points and five rebounds on
the afternoon. Kate Martone (Great Falls, VA)
registered nine points including a pair of three-pointers while
Laura Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, VA) added five points
for the Blue in their final game of the season.
