Worcester, MA --- Meghan Pajonas (Bristol, CT)
tallied game-highs of 12 points, 11 rebounds and four steals to
help WPI defeat visiting MIT 57-41 in NEWMAC women's basketball
action on Wednesday evening. With the win, WPI ups its record to
15-6 on the season and 8-2 in league play. MIT is now 3-18 overall
and 0-10 in NEWMAC action.
Pajonas, who notched her fifth double-double of the season, and
third in the last fourth games, highlighted a WPI post performance
that outscored the visitors 30-10 in the paint. Michele
Perry (Pelham, NH) chipped in with 10 points.
Sophomore point guard Natasha Deschene (Presque
Isle, ME) added 11 points and six rebounds for WPI, who used a 9-4
spurt late in the first half to take a 26-17 advantage into the
locker room at intermission. The Crimson and Gray, which never
trailed in the contest, got six points each from Caitlin
Macko (Cromwell, CT) and Rachel Salvatori
(Williston, VT) and five from Kaileen Selen
(Worcester, MA).
MIT was paced offensively by Michal Ruchelsman
(West Orange, NJ), who registered a team-best 10 points.
Clara Yuan (San Jose, CA) contributed seven points
for MIT while Sharon Prange (Arlington, VA) and
Chirsta Margossian (Revere, MA) both netted six
points. Kimberly Soo Hoo (Benicia, CA) shared
game-high assists honors with three.
With the win, WPI remains a game back of Wheaton, an 80-59 winner
tonight at home against Babson, in the NEWMAC standings. The
Engineers travel to Norton on Saturday at 3pm to face the Lyons in
a game that will go a long way in determining the NEWMAC regular
season champion. MIT also returns to action on Saturday, hosting
Mount Holyoke at 1pm.
