New London, CT--Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI)
allowed just two hits and an unearned run while striking out seven
in the opener while Brian Duncan (West Suffield,
CT) pitched a complete game scattering five hits and allowing two
earned runs in game two as WPI swept Coast Guard 3-1 and 4-3 in a
New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
doubleheader.
WPI (15-15, 8-4) scored all three of its runs in the first
inning as Ryan Rainone (Oakville, CT) had an RBI
single, Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) stole home on a
double steal and Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) had
an RBI infield single for the 3-0 lead.
Coast Guard (10-15, 4-8) got its only run of the game in the
bottom of the first as Chuck Arena (Houston, TX)
reached on an error and scord on an RBI double by Brian
Lisko (Waynesboro, PA)
Fahey improved to 4-2 on the season as he walked just one
batter.
Jacob Pitchford (Mena, AR) allowed just three
singles over the final six innings, but took the loss after being
touched for the three first inning runs. Pitchford (2-3) allowed
seven hits, three earned runs while not walking a batter and
striking out four.
In game two, Duncan and Coast Guard's Will
Becker (Rockaway Beach, NY) each threw complete games and
Matt Fiore's RBI single in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie and proved to
be the game winner as WPI clinched second place for the NEWMAC
tournament which begins on Thursday.
Rainone's RBI single in the first gave WPI a 1-0 lead. Coast
Guard took its first lead of the day with two in the second as
Kevin Higgins (Plymouth, MA) delivered an RBI
single and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Engineers tied the game in the third on an RBI groundout by
Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) scoring McNee, who
reached on an error.
Coast Guard took a 3-2 lead as Lisko led off the fourth with a
triple and scored on a groundball by Higgins which was booted.
WPI tied the game in the fifth on a solo homer by McNee to deep
centerfield.
Duncan (3-2) did not walk a batter and struck out four to pickup
the win while Becker allowed nine hits and three earned runs while
walking four and striking out eight as he suffered his first loss
of the season.
McGregor and Brandon Steacy (Framingham, MA)
each had two hits for WPI in game two while Lisko had a pair of
hits for the Bears in the nightcap.
