WPI 61, Becker 33
Worcester , MA --- Senior fullback George
Chyoghly (Boylston, MA) rushed for a career-high 172 yards
and three touchdowns to help host WPI defeat Becker 61-33 in
non-conference football action on Saturday afternoon. With
the win, WPI is now 3-0 while Becker falls to 0-3.
Becker scored the first 13 points of the game with a pair of
first quarter fourth down touchdowns. Anthony
Johnson (Springfield, MA) ran in from 2 yards out before
quarterback Karrone Stanley (West Haven, CT) found
Jakar Turner (Hollywood, FL) with a 25-yard
touchdown pass.
WPI then took control of the game, scoring 55 straight
points. Quarterback Rob Pantalone (Camp Hill
, PA) threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair to
tight end Mike Butler (Athol, MA). Pantalone now
has nine touchdown passes on the season, and five to Butler over
the past two games. The tight end totaled 167 receiving yards
on seven catches. Pantalone also found Orry
Cummings (Windham, ME) on an 82-yard touchdown.
The Engineers took a 27-13 advantage into the locker room at the
half and quickly extended their lead when Matt
Burger (Ballston Lake, NY) took the opening kick of the
second half 78 yards for a touchdown. The Crimson and Gray
scored 28 points over the first ten minutes of the third quarter
capped by freshman Brendan Gove's (Rutland, MA)
first career touchdown on a three-yard fumble return.
WPI reserve quarterback Mike Swanton (Foxboro,
MA) closed out the scoring for WPI when he ran it in from 10 yards
out just 46 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 61-20.
Johnson scored the final two touchdowns of the day for Becker,
including a 31-yard touchdown pass from Gabriel
Prophet (Washington, DC) on the final play of the game.
Junior linebacker Matt Boudreau (Rensselaer,
NY), the reigning Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year,
paced the WPI defensive attack with eight stops, including half a
sack. Nate Levesque (Fall River, MA) notched
six stops, two for loss, while Nick Ambrosino
(Glen Falls, NY) collected the only interception of the game.
Becker was led by the quarterback duo of Stanley and
Prophet. The pair combined for 282 yards passing and three
touchdowns. Thaddeus France (Centerville ,
MA) and Mark Welch (Windsor, CT ) combined for 13
tackles for the Hawks, with each having two for loss.
WPI will open up Liberty League action next Saturday evening at
home at 5pm versus US Merchant Marine Academy. Becker will
play the middle game of a three-game road swing, traveling to Mount
Ida for a 1pm contest.
