tallied goals to help Babson defeated host WPI 2-0 on Saturday in
the NEWMAC conference opener for both squads. The Beavers are
now 4-3 (1-0) on the season while WPI slips to 3-5 (0-1).
Babson broke into the scoring column 5:59 into the
match when Sam Bartman's (Upton, MA) free kick
from 25 yards out found the head of Graham who knocked it past the
WPI goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season.
The Beavers would add an insurance goal with just
53 second remaining in the contest when Stier deposited a rebound
in the back of the net following a shot off the left post from
Shir Castel (Boston, MA).
For the match, Babson enjoyed a 20-2 advantage in
shots while holding a 13-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sam Scarpato (Weston, MA) and
Kristy Benoit (Shrewsbury, MA) split time in net
for the Beavers with each being called upon to make one save.
Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA) was strong in
net for WPI, collecting seven saves on the day. Liz
Schreiber (Ashfield, MA) helped the Engineers stay in the
contest when she cleared a ball off the line in the 85th minute.
Both teams return to action with non-conference
contests on Tuesday. WPI will play host to Newbury at 7pm
while Babson travels to Tufts for a 4pm match.
