Worcester, MA --- Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA)
equaled her career-high with 23 points to lift WPI to a hard-fought
58-50 victory over Clark Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC women's
basketball action. With the win, WPI evens its record at 7-7
and 2-2 in the NEWMAC while Clark falls to 6-8 overall while also
leveling its record in the league at 2-2.
Selen, who also swiped a game-best four steals, overcame a slow
start by connecting on 7-of-11 shots in the second half, including
3-of-5 from beyond the arc. 19 of her 23 points came after
intermission.
Caitlin Macko (Cromwell, CT) added 11 points
for the Engineers while freshman Melissa Kuhn
(Stoughton, MA) contributed a career high 7 points, all in the
first half. Point guard Natasha Deschene (Presque
Isle, ME) and freshman Charlotte McDonnell
(Swansea, MA) both grabbed career highs in rebounds with eight
apiece as the Engineers.
Jess Lamothe (Westboro, MA) led Clark with 13
points while junior Sara Roderigue (Oakland, ME)
added 10 points for the Cougars. Nashoba Regional product,
sophomore center Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, MA)
chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.
After not holding a lead until Kuhn buried her second trey of
the first half with less than two minutes to play in the opening
frame, the Engineers took control of the game in the opening
moments of the second half, running off seven unanswered points to
claim a 34-25 lead.
The Cougars answered with an 8-2 spurt to pull within 36-33
before the Engineers embarked on a 9-0 run, buoyed by seven points
from Selen and Macko, to take its first double-digit lead of the
game. The Cougars were never able to get within eight the rest of
the contest.
Both squads return to the hardwood at 7pm on Wednesday.
WPI will entertain MIT in a NEWMAC match-up while Clark travels to
Maine to face Bowdoin for a non-conference tilt.
