Four Players Net Double Figures in Women's Basketball win over MIT

WPI 65, MIT 42

Box Score

Cambridge, MA --- A 19-2 run by WPI during the last six minutes of the first half proved to be the difference as it cruised to a 65-42 victory over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball game.  The, orginally scheduled for Worcester, was shifted to MIT due to a flood at WPI's Harrington Auditorium.

Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME), one of four WPI (8-7, 3-2 NEWMAC) players to reach double-figures, led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kelsey Cappelle (Ringoes, NJ) recorded a solid performance for MIT (7-8, 0-4 NEWMAC), as she finished with 16 points, eight of which from the free throw line, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks.

WPI opened the contest with a three-point play by Natasha Deschene (Presque Isle, ME), which was followed by back-to-back baskets from MIT's Sally Simpson (Minneapolis, MN) and Alice Yeh (Bellevue, WA). A free throw from Dubois returned the advantage to WPI, but Cappelle evened the contest at five with a free throw of her own. Two shots by Deschene at the charity stripe gave WPI the lead for good as it went on to establish a slight edge. Despite notching two field goal during a span of 10 minutes, MIT stayed within striking distance and eventually narrowed the gap to three (15-12) courtesy of a pair of free throws from Cappelle. On WPI's ensuing possession, a put-back by Dubois ignited the pivotal run as the visitors entered the break with a 34-14 lead.

WPI's defense continued to thwart MIT's scoring attempts in the second stanza as its margin grew to as many as 28 points. WPI was a force to be reckoned with in the paint, outscoring MIT, 38-14, and also registered a 24-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Clara Yuan (San Jose, CA) contributed eight points for MIT while Samia Mahjub (Barrington, IL) and Cheryl Kwinn (Monroe, NY) each grabbed six rebounds.

Deschene and Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA) tallied 10 points apiece as Rachel Salvatori (Williston, VT) contributed 12 for WPI. Amber Dangelo (West Kingston, RI) collected seven rebounds while Kate Maki (Fitchburg, MA) dished out a game-high five assists.

Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Saturday, Jan. 26. MIT will host Mount Holyoke College while WPI will travel to Springfield College.
