Cambridge, MA --- A 19-2 run by WPI during the last six minutes
of the first half proved to be the difference as it cruised to a
65-42 victory over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball game. The, orginally
scheduled for Worcester, was shifted to MIT due to a
flood at WPI's Harrington Auditorium.
Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME), one of four WPI
(8-7, 3-2 NEWMAC) players to reach double-figures, led the way with
16 points and eight rebounds. Kelsey Cappelle
(Ringoes, NJ) recorded a solid performance for MIT (7-8, 0-4
NEWMAC), as she finished with 16 points, eight of which from the
free throw line, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and
two blocks.
WPI opened the contest with a three-point play by
Natasha Deschene (Presque Isle, ME), which was
followed by back-to-back baskets from MIT's Sally
Simpson (Minneapolis, MN) and Alice Yeh
(Bellevue, WA). A free throw from Dubois returned the advantage to
WPI, but Cappelle evened the contest at five with a free throw of
her own. Two shots by Deschene at the charity stripe gave WPI the
lead for good as it went on to establish a slight edge. Despite
notching two field goal during a span of 10 minutes, MIT stayed
within striking distance and eventually narrowed the gap to three
(15-12) courtesy of a pair of free throws from Cappelle. On WPI's
ensuing possession, a put-back by Dubois ignited the pivotal run as
the visitors entered the break with a 34-14 lead.
WPI's defense continued to thwart MIT's scoring attempts in the
second stanza as its margin grew to as many as 28 points. WPI was a
force to be reckoned with in the paint, outscoring MIT, 38-14, and
also registered a 24-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Clara Yuan (San Jose, CA) contributed eight
points for MIT while Samia Mahjub (Barrington, IL)
and Cheryl Kwinn (Monroe, NY) each grabbed six
rebounds.
Deschene and Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA)
tallied 10 points apiece as Rachel Salvatori
(Williston, VT) contributed 12 for WPI. Amber
Dangelo (West Kingston, RI) collected seven rebounds while
Kate Maki (Fitchburg, MA) dished out a game-high
five assists.
Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Saturday, Jan. 26. MIT
will host Mount Holyoke College while WPI will travel to
Springfield College.
