Worcester, MA --- Melissa Martinelli (Vero
Beach, CA) and Natalie Moyer (Oklahoma City, OK)
combined for 31 points to help Coast Guard defeated host WPI 53-43
in the NEWMAC conference opener for both squads on Wednesday
evening. Coast Guard (8-2, 1-0) is off to its best start in school
history while WPI drops to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference
play.
After WPI's Caitlin Macko (Crowell, MA)
made one of two free throws with 4:27 left to tie the game at
39-39, Moyer and Katie Colella (Gales Ferry, CT)
each hit 3-pointers and DeCarol Davis (Woodbridge,
VA) connected on a nifty hook shot in the lane as the shot clock
expired to give the Bears a commanding 47-39 lead with 1:52
remaining.
Martinelli led all players with 16 points, while draining 7-of-11
attempts from the field. Moyer added 15 points and Davis
contributed 12 points for Coast Guard, who out rebounded WPI by a
48-33 margin. Corrinne McCormick ( Havertown , PA
) gobbled up a game-high 13 boards while Martinelli completed her
double-double with 10 rebounds.
Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA) excelled off the
bench for WPI, posting a team-best 14 points and a game-high five
steals. She canned three of WPI's four 3-pointers on the
night. Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME) registered nine
points and seven boards for the Engineers and Macko notched nine
points.
The Engineers parlayed 19 Coast Guard turnovers into 25 points.
By contrast, the Bears only tallied three points off 10 WPI
miscues.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday with NEWMAC
match-ups. WPI will travel to Wellesley for a 2pm game while Coast
Guard hosts Smith in a 1pm.
