South Hadley, MA --- Junior Lauren Orr
(Fullerton, CA) and sophomore Yuko Takahashi
(Tochigi, Japan) registered two goals apiece, as the Mount Holyoke
College women's soccer team cruised to a 5-1 triumph over
the WPI this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. The
Lyons five goals were their most since September 7, 2002, when they
defeated Elms College 7-0.
With its first victory over a NEWMAC foe this season, Mount
Holyoke ran its record to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in league play. Its
four wins are the most since it notched seven in 2005. The
Engineers dropped to 5-8 on the year. They are winless in four
tries against NEWMAC opponents.
WPI got on the board just 14 seconds into the match, when first
year midfielder Victoria Howland (Red Hook, NY)
stole a pass and fed sophomore forward Kristen
Garza (Kingston, MA), who fired a shot past Lyons junior
goalkeeper Elaine Harvey (Boston, MA) from just
inside the box. It was her team leading eighth marker of the
fall.
From there, it was all Mount Holyoke. The Lyons rallied for five
unanswered goals to close out the contest.
Orr scored the first in the 24th minute to knot things up at
1-1. After receiving a Takahashi pass from the midfield, she beat a
defender and slid a shot past Engineers sophomore goalkeeper
Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT) into the bottom right
hand corner of the goal.
The hosts grabbed a 2-1 edge in the 39th minute, when junior
midfielder Perry Markell (Portsmouth, RI)
collected a loose ball on the right side and blasted a shot past
Caras from point blank range. Markell's second goal of the season
proved to be her first career match winner.
Orr scooped up her own rebound and pushed in her fifth goal of
the year in the 51st minute to expand Mount Holyoke's
cushion to 3-1.
Takahashi then exploded for two goals in the 64th minute to put
things out of reach. After receiving a short pass from Orr at the
top of the box, she dribbled around multiple WPI defenders and
snapped a shot past Caras at the 63:07 mark. Thirty nine second
later, she collected her own rebound and found the back of the net
from close range. With her two tallies today, Takahashi ran her
season total to squad best seven.
The Lyons finished with a 27-17 advantage in the shot column.
Harvey amassed ten saves, while Caras collected 12.
Both clubs will resume their NEWMAC schedules on Tuesday at
7:00pm. Mount Holyoke will visit Springfield, while WPI will host
Wellesley.
