Springfield, MA --- The Springfield women's soccer team found
the back of the net three times in the first half and held on for a
4-0 win over WPI on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC play.
With the win, Springfield improves to 11-3-2, 6-1-1 in league play,
while the Engineers drop to 6-10-1, 1-6-1. The Pride are
currently ranked 22nd in the country in the latest NSCAA National
Poll.
The Pride opened up the scoring in the 19th minute as
Lauren Peltier found Jackie Moscardelli
at the top of the box. Moscardelli fired an open
shot past the diving Abaigeal Caras to give
Springfield a 1-0 edge.
Just under five minutes later, the Pride grabbed a 2-0 advantage as
Shanda Kogut banged home a rebound after Caras
made an initial save on Moscardelli's attempt.
Springfield then tallied its third goal of the first half at the
31:23 mark off one of its four-first half corner kicks.
Brittany Collins sent the ball in from the
corner, which Peltier headed home for her third goal of the
season.
Caitlin Sawczuk netted the Pride's only goal of
the second half just over seven minutes into the stanza as she
ripped a shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net for an
unassisted tally.
Springfield dominated the contest, holding WPI without a shot in
the game as the Pride held a 26-0 advantage in the shot department.
Caras finished with 10 saves in goal, while Sue
Jenney and Katie Delude split time
between the pipes for the Pride in the victory.
The Pride wrap up the regular season on Tuesday evening when it
hosts Smith. Kick off is slated for 7:00 pm. WPI
returns home for a match at the same time on Tuesday versus Babson.
