Norton, MA --- Three players scored as the Wheaton women's
soccer team downed visiting WPI 3-0 on Tuesday during NEWMAC action
in Mirrione Stadium.
The Lyons, who are receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America's (NSCAA) national poll and stand fifth in
New England, extended their league unbeaten run to 91 contests
while improving to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC. The
Engineers fell to 5-7 and 0-3. Wheaton has won the past 15 series
meetings, posting 12 shutouts.
Wheaton had a couple opportunities during the opening 23 minutes,
but sophomore Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA) had a
point-blank opportunity denied in the fifth minute by sophomore
keeper Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT), and Caras dove
to turn aside a penalty kick at 22:28 to keep the game
scoreless.
During the 26th minute, the Lyons broke the stalemate, as junior
back Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA) drove a pass
from the defensive half of the field over the WPI backs, and
Alvarez caught up before burying her 11th goal, including her third
winner.
Sophomore Emily Hough (Norwich, VT) scored off a
similar play at 34:12, waiting for freshman Jessica
Gray's (Carver, MA) chip over the defense to bounce before
burying her ninth tally of the season. Just after halftime, Hough
sent a through ball to freshman Jessica Stuart
(Weymouth, MA), who fought through the defense to score her third
goal in two contests at the 46:16 mark.
Wheaton finished with a 31-3 advantage in shots, including 13-0 in
the second half, while freshman Lindsay Leddy
(Warwick, RI) made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
Caras recorded 11 stops to keep WPI in the game for much of the
day.
The Lyons play host to nationally-ranked Springfield on Saturday at
1:00pm, as the Pride is tied for 22nd in the latest NSCAA national
poll while sitting fourth in the region. WPI ventures
to Mount Holyoke for a 1pm contest on Saturday.
