Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College women's soccer team
continued its strong play as it blanked WPI, 4-0, in the
quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday
afternoon.
With the win, the 20th-ranked Pride improve to 13-3-2 on the year,
while the Engineers season comes to a close with a 7-11-1
record.
The top-seeded Pride will host the semifinals of the tournament on
Saturday, Nov. 8. Springfield awaits to see who it will play in the
3:00 pm contest.
The Pride's offense continued to click as it netted four goals in
the game. In its last four games, Springfield has outscored its
opponents 18-1.
Jackie Moscardelli opened up the scoring in the
fifth minute as she dribbled into the box and slipped a shot past
Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT) to the right to give
Springfield a 1-0 lead.
Just over nine minutes later, Caitlin Sawczuk was
tripped in the box and the Pride was awarded a penalty kick.
Delaney Cantrall calmly tucked her shot into the
lower left corner as Springfield owned a 2-0 advantage heading into
halftime.
Five minutes into the second stanza Sawczuk found Nicole
Hanewich inside the box, and the senior striker notched
her team-leading eighth goal of the year as she touched it into the
back of the net.
Kayla Thibeault rounded out the Pride's offensive
attack as she ripped a left-footed strike in the 83rd minute from
inside the box for Springfield's fourth-goal of the game.
The Pride owned a 16-1 advantage in shots in the game, as well as
an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Sue Jenney and Katie Delude
combined for the shutout, although neither made a save in the
contest. Caras made three saves in goal and allowed all four of the
Pride's tallies.
Springfield will host the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday,
Nov. 8. Springfield awaits to see who it will play in the
3:00pm contest.
