Worcester, MA --- Union's Maria Tobin
(Schenectady, NY) and Michelle Rogers (Clarence,
NY) each registered double-doubles to lead the visitors to a 68-51
victory over WPI in non-conference women's basketball action
Tuesday evening at WPI's Harrington Auditorium.
Union (6-0) started the game on fire, using a blistering defense
and outstanding shooting to race out to 16-4 advantage in the
opening 5:30 en route to a 37-20 halftime lead.
Tobin led the Union attack with a game-high 24 points and 12
rebounds in addition to dishing out six assists and pilfering three
steals. Tobin was deadly from beyond the arc, as she made nine of
15 shots from the field and six of 12 attempts from long-distance.
Rogers finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, helping the
Dutchwomen maintain their lead with 11 points after
intermission.
Guard Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) kept the
Engineers (4-3) in the game early with 11 first-half points en
route to a double-double of her own with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Engineers fought back in the second half on the three-point
shooting of Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA), whose
back-to-back threes cut the Union lead to 15 with eight minutes to
go. Selen finished with 13 points off the bench. Serena
Dubois (Bangor, ME) dodged foul trouble throughout the
contest to tally nine points and eight boards.
Despite better shooting from WPI in the second half, the deficit
proved to be too much to overcome, as the Crimson and Gray's
shooting woes in the first half were the difference. WPI sank only
9-of-31 (29%) and 0-5 from long range before the break. Union was
also helped by 12 offensive rebounds in the second half ,which led
to a 10-0 margin in second-chance points and allowed them to keep
the Engineer attack at bay until the victory was secured.
Both teams hit the road later this week for their final contests
before the Christmas holiday. WPI ventures to Waterville, ME to
face Thomas at 2pm on Saturday while Union heads to Rochester at
7pm on Friday evening to take on the Yellowjackets.
