Worcester, MA --- The Anna Maria College men's soccer team
dropped its season opener to WPI by a score of 2-1 during the
opening round of the Worcester City Tournament on Friday at Clark's
Granger Field.
WPI got off to a strong start in the first half while
out-shooting the AMCATS 10-4. After several missed opportunities,
the Engineers got on the board as senior Ben Gilde
(Manchester, NH) delivered a perfect pass to junior Evan
Demers-Peel (Norton, MA) who quickly found the back of the
net to put WPI ahead, 1-0.
With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, the
Engineers went on the attack once again. After AMC goalkeeper
Scott Burokas (Auburn, MA) made a strong save on a
shot from WPI freshman Stephen LeBrecque, junior Wade
Mitchell-Evans (Cayman Islands) gathered the rebound and
delivered the second goal of the game.
Anna Maria went into halftime trailing, 2-0, but were far from
finished. The AMCATS appeared to be rejuvenated in the second half,
and seemed determined to get back in the game.
With time running out, Anna Maria junior George
Markopoulos (Worcester, MA) cut the Engineer's lead in
half with a goal in the 88th minute. It turned out to be
too-little, too-late as WPI held on for the 2-1 victory.
WPI goalkeeper Paul Moan (Watertown, MA) earned
the victory saving four of the five shots he faced. AMCATS senior
goalkeeper Scott Burokas (Auburn, MA) took the
tough loss, although he made several nice saves while stopping five
of seven shots on goal.
Offensive standouts for the Engineers included Demers-Peel and
Mitchell-Evans who both scored goals, while Gilde and LeBrecque
each collected an assist. For the AMCATS, Markopoulos shined as he
scored the team's lone goal and put all three of his shots on net.
WPI improves to 1-0 with the win and will play Worcester State
on Sunday at 12:00 pm. Anna Maria falls to 0-1 on the season and
will also return to action on Sunday when they take on Clark
University at 2:30 pm in the final game of the Worcester City
Tournament.
