Danbury, CT --- The Western Connecticut State University
women's soccer team began its defense of its 2007 NCAA Northeast
Region Championship with a 3-0 victory over WPI on Tuesday night at
the Westside Athletic Complex.
Lauren Matthews (Monroe, CT) got the scoring going in the
fourth minute when she received passes from Nicole Sieber
(Newtown, CT) and Angela Wozniak (Ludlow,
MA) and was left wide open on the left side of the goal.
It was Matthews' first goal since being injured in the 17th
game of the 2007 season.
Sieber made it 2-0 with her first marker in the 47th minute.
Sieber was set up by a pass in the middle from senior captain
Amy Corchard (Monroe, CT).
Lindsey LeConche (Rocky Hill, CT) rounded out the scoring
for WestConn with an insurance goal in the 68th minute of play.
Sophomore Jennifer Duran (Uncasville, CT)
had the assist on the final tally.
Shannon Cawley (Willimantic, CT) earned the shutout with
two saves in goal for the Colonials.
Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT) made 10 saves for the
Engineers, now 1-1. The Colonials out shot WPI, 30-5 on
the night.
WestConn travels to Wheaton College (MA) this Saturday for a
non-league match up with the Lyons at 3 pm. WPI also
returns to action on Saturday, hosting Salem State at 1pm.
