Worcester, MA --- Meg Gearin (Groton, MA)
netted a pair of second half goals to help propel Westfield State
to a 4-0 victory over host WPI in non-conference women's soccer
action on Tuesday evening. With the result, the Owls up their
record to 5-3 while WPI evens it mark at 4-4.
After a scoreless first half, Gearin dented the scoring column
in the 57th minute when she knocked home a loose ball from just
inside the 18-yard line. Alicia Chandler
(Duxbury, MA) provided the Owls some insurance in the 76th minute
when she tapped home a corner kick off the foot
of Susie Lachowski (Sutton, MA).
Westfield put the game out of reach when Gearin and Kate
MacLellan (Wilbraham, MA) tallied markers in the final
five minutes. The Owls received a late boost from their bench
as reserves Courtney Salerno (Holbrook, MA) and
Katrina Lessard (Bridgewater, MA) both registered
assists during the late scoring flurry.
Westfield goalkeeper Jess Pieciak (Three
Rivers, MA) was credited with two saves en route to earning her
second shutout of the season. Abaigeal Caras
(Essex, CT) and Sabrina Zayas (Canton, MA) shared
time in net for WPI. Caras made three stops in the first half
while Zayas turned away four shots in the second
stanza.
WPI returns to action on Thursday, hosting Newbury at 7pm in its
final non-conference match-up of the season. Westfield State
is off until Saturday when they venture to Bridgewater
State for a 1pm MASCAC contest.
