Worcester, MA --- Six different WPI players tallied their first
career goal to help the Engineers defeat visiting Newbury 12-1 in
non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday evening.
With the win, the Crimson and Gray improve their record to 5-4
while Newbury dips to 0-7.
Amanda Young (Goffstown, NH), Victoria
Howland (Red Hook, NY), Stacy Rudolf
(Somers, CT), Hailey Taylor (Colusa, CA),
Nica Sylvia (West Tisbury, MA) and Jackie
Ciesynski (Pawtucket, RI) all found the back of the net
for the first time as the Engineers won their final non-conference
contest of the season.
Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) notched a hat
trick giving her a team-best seven markers on the season. The
sophomore now has 22 career goals and moved past Agnieszka
Ziolek '05 for third all-time on the WPI scoring
list. Ziolek had 19 goals during her standout
career.
Rudolf and Howland each netted a pair of goals while
Kelsey Mawhiney (Johnson, RI), dished out a
game-best two assists. Katie Partridge
(Worcester, MA), Sylvia and Ciesynski each were credited with a
goal and an assist on the night.
Newbury dented the scoring column in the 64th minute when
Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, MA) knocked home a
rebound from Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, MA)
for her second goal of the season.
Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT) and Sabrina
Zayas (Canton, MA) shared time in net for WPI with Caras
earning the win and Zayas picking up the only save. Newbury
goalkeeper Anastasia Tridenti (Gloucester, RI) was
stellar in net for the Hawks, recording an impressive 14
stops.
Both teams are off until conference matches on Saturday
afternoon. WPI entertains MIT in its NEWMAC opener at 1pm
while Newbury ventures to Bay Path for a 2pm NECC contest.
