Kissimmee, FL --- Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA)
and Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) each tallied 15
points to help WPI defeat Sage College 88-53 in the opening round
of the ECAC Holiday Tournament in Kissimmee, FL. With the
win, the Engineers up their record to 7-4 while the Gators fall to
1-7.
The Crimson and Gray held Sage without a field goal for a 7:28
span midway through the first half to highlight a 18-1 run that
turned a 9-7 lead into a 27-8 advantage. Fontaine was key in
the spurt, notching eight points, including a 3-pointer and a
traditional 3-point play.
WPI shot an eye-popping 58.1% for the game. They took a
40-17 edge into the locker room at the break thanks to a defensive
effort that held the Gators to 6-of-21 (28.65) shooting from the
floor. The Engineers got a strong effort throughout from
their inside game, outscoring Sage 40-8 in the paint.
Fontaine collected 13 of her 15 points in the first half while
11 of Selen's season-high 15 points came after the
intermission. Freshman Lauren Hannmann (East
Greenbush, NY) chipped in with 10 points while point guard
Natasha Deschene (Presque Isle, ME) and
Caitlin Macko (Cromwell, CT) added nine and eight
respectively. Deschene led all players with six assists while
Fontaine corralled a game-best nine rebounds.
Carlin DeMarinis (Saratoga Springs, NY) led the
Sage attack with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.
After a day off on Saturday, WPI will close out the tournament
with a 10am game on Sunday morning versus Neumann (PA). Sage
will take on Neumann on Saturday at 2:30pm.
