Cambridge, MA --- Reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week
Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME) netted 18 points on
9-for-12 shooting and added a team-high eight rebounds to lead WPI
women's basketball to a 59-39 over MIT in NEWMAC conference action
Wednesday night. With the victory, WPI improves to 13-4 on the
season and remains unbeaten in conference play. MIT falls to 4-10,
0-4 in the NEWMAC.
The Engineers jumped out of the gate early, taking an 11-5 lead
to open the game. After a five-minute scoreless stretch resulting
from solid defensive play by both teams, MIT went on to score seven
of the next nine points, keyed by a three-pointer by Hannah
Sparkman (Tenafly, NJ) that brought MIT to within one at
13-12. WPI followed the MIT spurt by going on a 16-2 run to close
out the half with a 15-point lead. WPI's defense stymied MIT for
much of the contest, holding the Cambridge Engineers to just 26.7%
shooting from the floor and 11% from three-point land. The Crimson
and Gray also forced 19 MIT turnovers leading to 22 points.
The Engineers continued their late first-half success by opening
the second half with a 21-8 run that extended their lead to 28
points midway through the second half. Caitlin
Macko (Cromwell, CT) had eight points, while
Melissa Kuhn (Stoughton, MA) also added eight off
the bench, to help WPI maintain their double-digit advantage
throughout the second half.
Sparkman led the way for MIT with 13 points, while
Cheryl Kwinn (Monroe, NY) contributed eight points
and a game-high 10 rebounds. MIT made a valiant effort to climb
back into the game later in the second half and ended up outscoring
WPI 30-25 after the intermission, ending the game on a 9-0 run.
They also edged WPI in points off the bench by a 22-16 margin.
The Engineers return home this Saturday to battle Springfield
for sole possession of first-place in the NEWMAC. Tip-off is
at 2pm. MIT will also be in action this Saturday at 2, when they
travel down the Mass Pike to take on Mount Holyoke.
