New London, CT --- Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA)
tallied 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to help
propel visiting WPI to a 60-36 win over Coast Guard Wednesday
evening in the NEWMAC opener for both squads. The Engineers,
winners of three straight and five of their last six, improve to
9-4 while Coast Guard slips to 0-9.
WPI connected on its first eight shots from the field en route
to opening up a 16-2 advantage to start the contest. From
that point forward, the Crimson and Gray relied on a stifling
defense, limiting the hosts to 27.5% shooting from the floor on the
night.
Fontaine starting the night strong scoring her team's first
eight points. The sophomore, who led all players with nine
rebounds, is averaging 13.8 points and 9.6 rebounds in five games
over the last nine days. Serena Dubois (Bangor,
ME) chipped in with 13 points for the Engineers and Caitlin
Macko (Cromwell, CT) added 12.
Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, FL) paced Coast
Guard with 15 while Jennifer Tamminen (Irvine, CA)
poured in 10. The duo each gobbled up seven rebounds for the
Bears.
Each squad forced 18 turnovers on the night, but WPI was able to
parlay them into 18 points while limiting Coast Guard to just two
points off miscues.
Both teams return to play on Saturday with NEWMAC
contests. WPI hosts Wellesley at 3pm while Coast Guard
ventures to Northampton, MA for a 2pm tilt with Smith.
