WPI 60, Coast Guard 36

Box Score

New London, CT --- Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) tallied 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to help propel visiting WPI to a 60-36 win over Coast Guard Wednesday evening in the NEWMAC opener for both squads.  The Engineers, winners of three straight and five of their last six, improve to 9-4 while Coast Guard slips to 0-9.

WPI connected on its first eight shots from the field en route to opening up a 16-2 advantage to start the contest.  From that point forward, the Crimson and Gray relied on a stifling defense, limiting the hosts to 27.5% shooting from the floor on the night.

Fontaine starting the night strong scoring her team's first eight points.  The sophomore, who led all players with nine rebounds, is averaging 13.8 points and 9.6 rebounds in five games over the last nine days. Serena Dubois (Bangor, ME) chipped in with 13 points for the Engineers and Caitlin Macko (Cromwell, CT) added 12.

Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, FL) paced Coast Guard with 15 while Jennifer Tamminen (Irvine, CA) poured in 10.  The duo each gobbled up seven rebounds for the Bears.

Each squad forced 18 turnovers on the night, but WPI was able to parlay them into 18 points while limiting Coast Guard to just two points off miscues.

Both teams return to play on Saturday with NEWMAC contests.  WPI hosts Wellesley at 3pm while Coast Guard ventures to Northampton, MA for a 2pm tilt with Smith.
