Worcester, MA --- Senior Liz Tuite
(Hopkinton, MA) netted the only goal of the game and freshman
Rebecca Newman (Howell, NJ) registered her second
shutout of the season to help WPI defeat visiting Mount Holyoke 1-0
in NEWMAC women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
The win pushes WPI's record to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in conference
play while Mount Holyoke falls to 1-10 on the season and 0-4 in the
NEWMAC.
The Engineers turned a corner kick into the match's only goal in
the 30th minute when Hailey Taylor (Colusa, CA)
sent the ball into the box and it deflected off the Mount Holyoke
goalkeeper to Tuite, who tucked it into the goal for her first
marker of the year and second of her career. The assist was
Taylor's team-best fifth this fall.
The Lyons had a pair of good chances to even the match but
Lauren Orr's (Fullerton, CA) direct kick from
25-yards out floated over the cross bar in the 70th minute and
Mallory's Phaneuf's (Manchester, NH) shot five
minutes later was cleared off the line by WPI back Liz
Schreiber (Ashfield, MA). The Crimson and Gray
nearly added to their lead in the 72nd minute but Kristen
Garza's (Kingston, MA) blistering shot hit the post.
Newman was credited with six saves on the day en route to
improving her record to 4-5 on the season while Mount Holyoke's
Ingibjorg Magnusdottir (Reykavik, Iceland) made
two stops.
The Lyons enjoyed a slight 12-9 edge in shots and took seven of
the game's nine corner kicks. Orr led all players with seven
shots for the visitors while Graza attempted three for the
Engineers.
WPI returns to the field on Tuesday when they head to Wellesley
for a 4:15pm road match. Mount Holyoke is also back in action
on Tuesday, hosting defending NEWMAC champion Springfield at
4:30pm.
