Worcester, MA --- Five different Wheaton players notched goals
to help the regionally ranked Lyons defeat host WPI 5-0 in a NEWMAC
women's soccer contest on Tuesday evening. With the win,
Wheaton improves to 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference action
while the Engineers dip to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in NEWMAC play.
After nearly 43 minutes of scoreless action, the Lyons dented
the scoring column with just 2:02 remaining in the first half when
Alessia Viscomi (Newton, MA) successfully
converted a penalty kick for her second goal of year.
Wheaton, who is fourth in the latest NSCAA New England ranking
and is receiving votes in the national poll, quickly doubled its
lead in the 48th minute when Christina Bertrand
(Agawam, MA) picked up a ball that deflected off a WPI player and
smacked a shot that ricocheted off the post and into the net.
The Lyons then increased its advantage to 4-0 on a pair of goals
just over three minutes apart midway through the second
stanza. Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA)
blistered a shot from 25 yards out in the 61st minute for her fifth
marker of the season before setting up freshman Samantha
Cronin (Wethersfield, CT) for her first career
tally. The visitors closed out the scoring in the 79th minute
when Cassey Muse (Candia, NH) registered an
unassisted goal for her NEWMAC-leading 12th goal this fall.
Liz Schreiber (Ashfield, MA), Hailey
Taylor (Colusa, CA) and Victoria Howland
(Red Hook, NY) all recorded shots for WPI, who was outshot 17-3 on
the evening. Wheaton attempted six of the game's nine corner
kicks.
Goalkeepers Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI) and
Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA) each registered
a save for the Lyons, who posted their fifth straight
shutout. Leddy worked the first 77:16 while Cawley played the
final 12:44. Ally Stoyle (Pembroke, MA) and
Rebecca Newman (Howell, NJ) combined for three
saves for the hosts.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday. WPI will host
Mount Holyoke at noon while Wheaton will venture to Western Mass to
take on defending NEWMAC champion Springfield at 2:30pm.
