Worcester, MA --- Freshman Caitlin O'Connor
(New Hampton, NH) netted 14 points for the second consecutive day
to help WPI defeat Becker 53-36 in the consolation game of the 2009
Worcester City Women's Basketball Tournament hosted by Worcester
State. With the win on Saturday afternoon, the Engineers
improve to 1-2 on the young season while the Hawks slip to
0-2.
After Becker scored on a Heidi Miller
(Sanbornton, NH) layup on its initial possession, the Engineers
then rattled off 11 of the game's next 12 points to seize a lead
they would not relinquish. WPI did it with defense and
rebounding. They limited the Hawks to 25.9% (14-for 54)
shooting from the floor, including 0-for-9 from 3-point land and
enjoyed a 53-35 advantage on the glass.
O'Connor and Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA)
sparked the Engineers off the bench. Logan gobbled up a
game-best 11 rebounds and swiped three steals while O'Connor added
four steals to go along with her 14 points. The WPI reserves
outscored its Becker counterparts by a 28-4 margin.
Lauren Hannmann (East Greenbush, NY) chipped in
with 11 points and eight rebounds for the Crimson and Gray while
Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) added 10
points.
Miller led all players with 16 points and a team-high eight
rebounds for the Hawks. Defensively, Courtney
Fiske (Westfield, MA) stood out for Becker with eight of
its 14 steals. Nicole Morse (Alton, NH)
contributed six points and seven boards for BC.
Worcester State won the championship game with a hard-earned
67-61 victory over Nichols. O'Connor and Miller were joined
on the All-Tournament team by Jessica Nelson and
