Worcester, MA --- Freshman Theresa Logan
(Southboro, MA) came off the bench to score 16 points, grab 10
rebounds and dish out six assists to lift host WPI over Smith 75-64
in the NEWMAC women's basketball league opener for both squads on
Wednesday evening. WPI, the defending regular season
champion, is now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play while Smith
falls to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in NEWMAC action.
The hosts used a 15-1 spurt midway through the first half to
push a 3-point lead into a 25-9 advantage. During the run,
the Engineers defense held Smith without a field goal (0-for-6) for
6:11, while pressuring the Pioneers into five
turnovers. From that point forward, WPI would not see
its lead shrink to single digits the rest of the way.
Logan's second career double-double highlighted four WPI scorers
in double figures. Lauren Hannmann
(East Greenbush, NY) netted a season-best 13 points while
Caitlin O'Connor (New Hampton, NH) and
Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) chipped in with 13
and 12 points respectively. Baillie McNally
(Mapleville, RI) contributed five assists and Melissa
Kuhn (Stoughton, MA) added eight points, four steals and
three assists.
Smith's Jessica Welk (Arlington, WA) totaled 15
of her 16 points in the second half to share game-high scoring
honors. Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark)
tallied 13 points for the Pioneers while Lisa Maria
Vuono (Lyndhurst NJ) led all players with 13 rebounds on
the night. Daron Dean (Brush Praire, WI)
aided the Smith defensive effort with a pair of blocks.
The Crimson and Gray were outrebounded by Smith by a slim 42-41
margin, but did damage in the offensive glass, turning 18 offensive
rebounds into 23 second chance points. Hannmann notched eight
boards while Fontaine hauled in seven and Brittany
McNally (Mapleville, RI) gobbled up six.
Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Saturday with road
contests. WPI heads down Park Ave. to take on cross-town
rival Clark at 1pm while Smith ventures to Babson to face the
Beavers at 2pm.
