Worcester, MA --- Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA)
and Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA) combined to
score 20 second-half points to help host WPI rally from a
double-digit first half deficit to defeat Johnson & Wales 55-46
in a non-conference women's basketball contest played Wednesday
evening. With the win, the Engineers run their record to 7-3
while the Wildcats dip to 3-6 on the season.
Trailing 41-40 with just under eight minutes left in the game,
Logan netted a layup and drained a 3-pointer on consecutive
possessions to give WPI a lead they would not relinquish. The
Engineers closed the contest with 15-5 spurt, with 13 of the points
coming from the duo of Logan and Fontaine. Defense sparked
the rally as the hosts held Johnson & Wales to just six made
field goals in the second half, connecting on just 17.6% of its
attempts.
Logan came off the bench to pour in a game-high 18 points on
7-of-9 shooting from the floor. The freshman contributed all
18 points scored by WPI reserves and outscored the JWU bench, who
totaled seven points on the night. Fontaine tallied 15 points
and 12 rebounds en route to posting her second double-double of the
season and sixth of her career.
Lauren Hannmann (East Greenbush, NY) and
Melissa Kuhn (Stoughton, MA) added 10 and nine
points respectively for the Engineers, who outrebounded the
Wildcats by a 45-35 margin.
Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, CA) had a strong
game for Johnson & Wales. The senior registered
team-bests of 17 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
Jeniphr Moxley (Lakewood, WA) chipped in with 10
points for the Wildcats, who shot 55.6% in the first half to help
open up an 11-point (28-17) lead late in the first
half.
WPI returns to the court on Sunday, January 3rd when they travel
to Middlebury for 2pm contest with the Panthers. Johnson
& Wales heads to New York City this weekend for the CCNY
Tournament. The Wildcats will face the host Beavers at 2pm on
Saturday.
