Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Sarah Connors
(Gardner, MA) and senior captain Shannon Feeley
(West Springfield, MA) each netted two goals apiece for Worcester
State as the Lancers defeated cross town rival WPI, 5-0, in non
conference women's soccer action. With the win WSC improves to 3-2
while the Engineers even out at 3-3.
Worcester State started off the contest with three corners in
the opening six minutes before the Connors scored her first goal in
the 17th minute.
Connors struck again in the 21st off of a corner kick when her
attempt at the net glanced off of a WPI defender into the net for
the unassisted tally. Five minutes later Feeley found the back of
the net on her first marker of the season when she took a feed from
sophomore Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA).
In the second period WPI tried everything they could to break
the shutout as they rattled off six shots (five on goal) in the
first 15 minutes of the half, but keeper Angieszaka
Scychtysz (Warren, MA) kept the Crimson and Gray off the
board. The Lancer defense then settled down and held the Boynton
Hillers to just three shots for the rest of the contest.
Feeley added her second goal of the contest in the 66th minute
on a cross from Clifford and freshman Brianne
Beckman (Lakeville, MA) added a marker in the 81st to cap
off the scoring in the game for WSC.
Scychtysz ended the contest with eight saves while WPI freshman
goalkeeper Rebecca Newman (Howell, NJ) made two
stops.
Worcester State held a 7-3 shooting edge in the first half, but
then both teams were even at 10-10 in the second stanza. WSC also
had a 10-0 advantage in corners. Clifford's two points gives her a
team-high of 11 for the season.
Both teams will play their next contest on Saturday. The Lancers
open up MASCAC play with Fitchburg State on the road at 10 AM while
the Engineers travel to Newbury at noon.
