Westfield, MA --- Junior Ali Pease
(Ludlow, MA) recorded two goals and an assist and sophomore
Kate Wye (Blackstone, MA) tallied two goals to
power Westfield State to an 8-1 victory over WPI in women's
soccer action on Tuesday evening, Sept. 22.
The Owls, ranked 10th in the lastest New England Division III
poll, boosted their record to 6-1-1 and ran their non-losing streak
to seven straight games. WPI is 3-5.
Junior Kate MacLellan (Wilbraham, MA)
opened the scoring for Westfield with an unassisted goal in the
21st minute. The Owls led 2-0 at halftime when Wye, with an assist
from Pease, scored with 34 seconds remaining in the first
half.
Westfield erupted for three straight goals in a span of five
minutes early in the second half half to take a commanding 5-0
advantage. Freshman Leann Rivard (Chicopee, MA)
scored in the 48th minute and Pease struck for back-to-back goals
in the 52nd and 53rd minutes.
WPI got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute on a goal by junior
forward Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) off a feed by
Lindsey Grasis (East Brookfield, MA). The
goal was Garza's seventh of the fall and extended her school record
for career goals to 32.
Westfield out-shot WPI, 23-2.
The Owls are idle until Saturday when they host Bridgewater
State at 1pm. WPI opens up NEWMAC play at the same time on
the road at MIT.
