Salem, MA --- Salem State College opened up their 2009 season on
a winnning note as the Lady Vikings downed the WPI Engineers 1-0 at
Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.
Taylor Orlando (Danvers, MA) broke a scoreless
tie on a pass from Erin O'Brien (Hanson,MA) with a
shot from 10 yards out at the 74:20 to provide the only scoring of
the game.
Leah Poctner (Wilmington, MA) earned the shutout for Salem
State (1-0) which controlled the ball in their offensive end for
most of the afternoon.
WPI (1-2) saw their best scoring chance turned away with 14
minutes remaining when Poctner stopped Katie
Partridge (Worcester, MA) on a free kick. Rebecca
Newman (Howell, NJ) made eight saves, but suffered her
first loss of the season.
Salem State will return to action on Tuesday, September 8th,
when they host Gordon College at Alumni Field at 6PM. The Engineers
take the field again on Wednesday as they play host to nationally
ranked Western Connecticut at 7pm.
