Paxton, MA --- The WPI men's soccer team
got two goals from Tournament MVP Jason Hopkins
(Mendon, MA) to defeat Anna Maria 5-0 and capture the 2009
Worcester City Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon. In the
consolation game, Clark received four assists from freshman

In game one, WPI took an early lead on a score by Mike
Ford (Whitman, MA) from an assist by Thomas
Cucinotta (Easton, MA) in the first five minutes of play.
The Engineers would tack on another tally just before the end of
the first half, as senior Tommy Zajac (Merrimack,
NH), found the back of the net off a feed from fellow senior
Matthew Gonsalves (Swansea, MA) to send WPI into
the intermission leading 2-0.
The second half was all Engineers, as WPI outshot the AMCATS
13-1 in the period. Tournament MVP Jason Hopkins scored twice to
put the game away, while Tim Driscoll (Easton, MA)
added another goal to give the Engineers the 5-0 victory.
Adding assists for the Crimson and Gray second half
scoring spurt were Gonsalves, Tommy Zajak
(Merrimack, NH) and Justin Dempsey (Cliffton Park,
NY).
Kirk Dragsbaek (Sherborn, MA) and
Stephen Allen (Pembroke,
MA) combined in net on the shotout. Dragsbaek
worked the first 78:36, recording the only WPI save on the
day. Hopkins led WPI with his two goals while Gonzalves
dished out a match-high two assists.
In the second match, Clark jumped on the board in the very first
minute of play as Trevor Hendry (Waterford, CT)
beat the Hawks' goalie after getting a beautiful feed from Ranallo.
The Cougars then pulled away in the 19th minute of play, scoring
three times in just over a minute of play. Mike
Trobagis (Acton, MA) collected two goals during the
flurry, while Will Van Noppen (Providence, RI)
scored once, and Ranallo added two more assists.
Clark went into halftime with a 23-1 advantage in shots and a
four goals to nil lead.
The Cougars kept the pressure on in the second half, scoring
three more times, including two scores by junior Tim
Doenmez (Dublin, NH) and another by freshman
Shadoe Hanson (Kingston, Jamaica) to put the
finishing touches on the 7-0 victory.
All four teams will be back in action on Wednesday. Tournament
Champions WPI will take battle Wentworth on the road, Clark will
travel to face Colby-Sawyer, Becker will host Mass Maritime, and
the AMCATS will try and bounce back versus Emerson on the road.
