Worcester, MA --- Lauren Hannmann (East
Greenbush, NY) scored seven points during a 9-0 WPI run sandwiched
between both halves to spark the host Engineers to a hard-fought
59-51 victory over Mount Holyoke in a NEWMAC women's basketball
matchup on Wednesday evening. With the victory, WPI ups its
record to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the Lyons
fall to 4-10 on the season and 2-5 in NEWMAC action.
The visitors opened the contest on a 9-2 run and led for a
majority of the first half before Melissa Kuhn's
(Stoughton, MA) jumper gave WPI its first lead at 22-21 with just
over four minutes remaining in the opening stanza. It looked
like the Lyons would take a two-point advantage into the locker
room after Angelic Pascal (Lawrence, MA) drained a
3-pointer with 23 seconds left but Hannmann answered right back
with a trey of her own to give the Engineers a 28-27 lead at the
break.
After Brittany McNally (Mapleville, RI)
registered a layup to open the half, Hannmann connected on a jumper
and a layup to put the Crimson and Gray up 34-27 just 1:16 into the
second half. The game was tightly contested the rest of the
way with WPI never leading by more than 12 points but the Lyons
unable to get closer than five.
Hannmann followed up her career-high of 27 points last weekend
versus Wheaton with a game-best 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from
the floor. Guard Melissa Kuhn
(Stoughton, MA) filled the stat sheets with nine points, seven
rebounds and four steals while Baillie McNally
(Mapleville, RI) chipped in nine points and six
boards.
Pascal netted 12 of her team-best 14 points for the Lyons in the
first half. Erin Cain (Quincy, MA) added 13
points and Jess Olson (Gilbert, AZ) contributed
eight points and eight boards for Mount Holyoke, who outrebounded
WPI 33-28 on the night while not allowing the Engineers a second
chance point.
WPI concludes a brief two-game homestand on Saturday when they
host Wellesley at 3pm. Mount Holyoke is also back in action
on Saturday, venturing to MIT at 2pm.
