Worcester, MA --- All 16 players that dressed dented the scoring
and rebounding columns and 13 different players dished out at least
one assist to help WPI defeat visiting Fitchburg State 85-47 in a
non-conference men's basketball contest on Saturday
afternoon. The victory helps the Engineers, winners of four
straight, move to 10-1 while Fitchburg State dips to 3-7 on the
season.
WPI led wire-to-wire, improving to 6-0 this season at
home. The game marked the sixth time in 11 contests that the
Engineers did not trail and the Crimson and Gray have only been
behind at home for a total 22 seconds out of 240 minutes played
this season at Harrington Auditorium.
The hosts used 9-0 and 10-0 spurts in the opening half of the
first stanza to open up a 44-23 halftime advantage. The
Engineers converted 11 Fitchburg State first half turnovers into 20
points and controlled the boards in the initial 20 minutes by a
23-13 margin.
Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA) and Ryan
Brown (Worcester, MA) shared game-high scoring honors for
the Engineers with 13 points while point guard Kyle
Nadeau (Webster, MA) tossed in a season-best 11.
Lone senior Bennett Lessard (Belgrade, ME) paced a
balanced effort on the boards, hauling in team-high six
rebounds. On the day, WPI enjoyed a 20-6 edge in second
chance points while out rebounding the Falcons 48-29.
Jamie Shannon (Lowell, MA) totaled four assists
for the hosts.
Tim Graham (Arlington, MA) led the Fitchburg
attack with 10 points and seven rebounds. Colin
London (Worcester, MA) aided the visitors with seven
points while Kyle Berk (Putnam Valley, NY)
contributed five points in just eight minutes of action.
WPI is back in action on Wednesday when they open up NEWMAC
conference play with a trip to Norton, MA to face Wheaton at
5:30pm. Fitchburg State ventures to Anna Maria on Tuesday for
a non-conference tilt beginning at 7:30pm.
