Worcester, MA– WPI senior Kristen
Garza (Kingston, MA) scored the game-winning goal in
the 85th minute lifting the visiting Engineers to a dramatic 3-2
come-from-behind win over host Clark in NEWMAC women's soccer
action on Saturday morning.
The goal for Garza not only provided the difference on the
scoreboard but gives her 100 career points, the most in school
history. The victory, meanwhile, pushes the Engineers record to
4-9-1 overall and 2-4 in league play. Clark, on the other hand,
slips to 5-9 and 2-4 in conference action.
Things started off in fine fashion for the Cougars who got their
first goal courtesy of a pair of emerging
freshmen. Janelle Pasternack (North
Brookfield, MA) sent a ball into the box that was headed home by
classmate Lucia Pantuosco (Somers, CT)
at the 10:23 mark to give Clark the early lead.
WPI evened the score a little more than three minutes later when
Megan
Forti (Lynn, MA) played a ball off of a Cougar
defender and found herself one-on-one with Clark netminder
Joanna Clark (Windham, ME) who she beat
to knot the score.
The Cougars went back ahead in the 34th minute
when Erin Peete (Clinton, MA) setup
senior Megan O'Rourke for her first
goal of the season and a 2-1 Clark lead.
WPI would answer back after halftime when Engineer freshmen Kelly
Ames (Glastonbury, CT) and Forti teamed up to even the
score at 2-2 at the 60:10 mark.
Forti then assisted on Garza's game-winner at the 84:10.
The victory was the first for the Engineers over the Cougars
since a 1-0 victory on October 22, 2005.
WPI goalkeeper Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY) made nine stops for the
Engineers, while Clark turned back three shots for the Cougars.
The Scarlet and White have now dropped four of their last five
matches and will host NEWMAC power Springfield on Tuesday before
heading out on the road to Mount Holyoke and Wellesley to end the
regular season.
The Engineers, meanwhile, host both Mount Holyoke and Wellesley
before visiting Becker and Smith to end their regular season.
