Worcester, MA --- Ashley Tourso (Glen Rock, NJ)
and Bridget McCurdy (Weston, MA) scored goals less
than nine minutes apart early in the second half to propel visiting
Babson to a 2-1 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest
played Saturday evening as part of WPI's Homecoming weekend.
With the victory, Babson remains tied with Wellesley atop the
NEWMAC standings with seven points. The Beavers are 7-3-1
overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. WPI dips to 4-6-1 on
the season and 1-2 in NEWMAC action.
After a first half that saw only five total shots, Babson took a
1-0 lead at 51:06 when Tourso knocked home her own rebound for her
fourth marker of the year. The guests doubled the advantage
as McCurdy netted her first goal of the fall when she collected a
deflected ball and lobbed it into the back of the net at 60:10.
WPI came storming back and got to within 2-1 when Megan
Forti (Lynn, MA) swarmed on a loose ball near the net
and deposited her team-best fifth goal at the 68:41 mark. The
Engineers kept the pressure and nearly tied the game 28 seconds
later when Kristen Garza (Kingston,
MA) slipped past the Babson defenders and hit the post.
That would prove to be the best chance for the hosts to level the
score.
Goalkeeper Lisa Wojnar (Bellarie, TX) was
credited with three saves for Babson, who outshot the Engineers
13-6 on the night and enjoyed a 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. WPI
netminder Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY) made five stops for the Crimson
and Gray.
Both squads continue NEWMAC action on Tuesday afternoon at
4pm. WPI ventures to Cambridge to face defending tournament
champion MIT while the Beavers entertain Clark.
