Worcester, MA --- Ashley McFarlane (Ludlow, MA)
and Brittney Collins (Vernon, CT) each came off
the bench to score a goal to lift Springfield to a 2-0 victory over
WPI in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Pride are now 8-4 on the season and 4-1 in
conference play while the Engineers slip to 3-8-1 overall and 1-4
in NEWMAC action.
Springfield came out early and took 11 of the game's first 12
shots but were repelled by several strong saves by WPI goalkeeper
Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY) and a nifty play by Engineer
back Nikole
Jordan (Harvard, MA), who cleared a ball off the line
in the 13th minute. The Pride broke up the scoreless game at
34:15 on a McFarlane header from six yards out after a cross by
Erica Donnelly (Weymouth, MA). The marker
was the second of the season for the sophomore.
The second half saw each team attempt four shots and remained
1-0 until late in the contest. Springfield added an insurance
tally at 86:19 when Collins collected a feed by Jen
Courossi (Methuen, MA) 15 yards away from the center of
the goal and deposited her fifth goal of the year into the top
right corner.
Springfield netminder Erin Greenstein
(Framingham, MA) and Willer each ended the game with five
saves. The visitors outshot the Engineers 15-6 on the day and
enjoyed a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Six different players
accounted for the WPI shots, five of which were on
net.
WPI is off until next Saturday when they venture down Park Ave.
to face city rival Clark at 11am in a key NEWMAC contest.
Springfield heads to Rensselaer on Wednesday for a 7:30pm
non-conference matchup with RPI.
