Worcester, MA --- Melissa Kuhn (Stoughton, MA)
poured in a game-high 18 points to lift WPI to a 63-41 victory
against visiting MIT in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest on
Wednesday evening. With the result, WPI moves to 16-8 on the
season and 12-5 in conference action while MIT slips to 5-18
overall and 3-14 in NEWMAC play.
WPI's win, coupled with Wheaton's victory over Wellesley and
Springfield's loss at Smith, creates a three-way tie for second
place between the Engineers, Lyons and
Pride.
WPI never trailed in the matchup, jumping out to a 12-3 lead
while holding the visitors to just one made field goal in the
opening 9:19. The homestanding Engineers held MIT to 24%
shooting from the floor in the first half en route to taking a
23-16 advantage into the locker room at the
intermission.
Kuhn canned 8-of-13 shots from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the
3-point arc. Lauren Hannmann (East
Greenbush, NY) chipped in with 14 points while gobbling-up a
game-best eight rebounds. On the night WPI enjoyed a 39-17
edge on the glass and turned that into a 28-8 advantage in points
in the paint.
Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) registered nine
points and five boards for the hosts while Brittany
McNally (Mapleville, RI) and Theresa
Logan (Southboro, MA) each added eight. The total
was a career-high for McNally, a senior forward.
Sally Sampson (Minneapolis, MN) led the MIT
attack with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Aparana Sud (Wellesley, MA) tossed in 10 points
while Lauren Sascha Burton (Seattle, WA) paced all
players with six assists.
The contest, along with WPI's men's game against Springfield, was
part of WPI's annual Pink Zone doubleheader to promote breast
cancer awareness and to benefit breast cancer research.
WPI is back in action on Saturday when they close out the
regular season at home versus rival Wheaton at 1pm. MIT
closes out its three-game regular season-ending road trip on
Saturday at Smith at 2pm.
