Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Nicole Wurdeman
(Rowley, MA) tallied 20 points and hauled in six rebounds to help
Babson remain undefeated in NEWMAC play with a 59-49 road win over
host WPI on Saturday afternoon. With the result, the Beavers
are now 18-3 overall and a perfect 14-0 in conference play.
WPI dips to 13-8 on the season and 9-5 in NEWMAC action.
After WPI opened the scoring with an Elle
Fontaine (Franklin, MA) jumper, Allanah
Wynn's (Quincy, MA) 3-pointer gave the visitors a lead it
would not relinquish just 2:10 in the contest. The game
however stayed tight but Michelle Kenel's
(Rockaway Beach, NY) buzzer-beating bankshot gave the Beavers a
26-20 advantage at the break.
WPI rallied from 14 down midway through the second half to get
within seven, 53-46, with three minutes remaining. The
Crimson and Gray had a pair of 3-pointers rattle out and then,
after the second offensive rebound, Wynn collected a steal and
converted a layup that secured Babson's first win at WPI since
January of 2005.
Wynn netted 12 points for the Beavers while Kathleen
King (Framingham, MA) added eight points and eight
boards. Damisi Adewumi (Bronx, NY) dished
out three assists for Babson, who had six players hand out multiple
helpers on the day.
Fontaine paced the WPI attack with 14 points while sharing
game-high honors with eight rebounds. Melissa
Kuhn (Stoughton, MA) chipped in with nine points while
Lauren Hannmann (East Greenbush, NY),
Charlotte McDonnell (Swansea, MA) and
Caitlin O'Connor (New Hampton, NH) tossed in seven
apiece.
Both teams return to the court on Wednesday evening. WPI
travels to South Hadley for a 7pm showdown with Mount Holyoke while
Babson hosts cross-town rival Wellesley at 5:30pm.
