NORTON, MA --- Wheaton freshman Rebecca Raymond
(Lowell, MA) scored a goal in each half for the Lyons to defeat WPI
in NEWMAC conference action Saturday afternoon at Mirrione
Stadium. Remaining undefeated at 6-0-1, the Lyons came into
today's action ranked 21st in the country and third in the region
by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA). The Engineers fell to 1-6.
Wheaton tallied four first-half goals, including senior
Emily Hough's (Norwich, VT) winner at 19:09.
Off a corner kick from freshman Joy-Marie
Fernandes (Woburn, MA), Hough took the carom off the right
post, juked an Engineer defender and blasted her left-footed shot
past WPI freshman goalie Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY).
Hough's goals marked the first of a string of four spanning
7:58. Sophomore Cassey Muse's (Candia, NH)
20-yard strike from just outside the top of the box made the score
2-0 at 21:53 before senior Alessia Viscomi's
(Newton, MA) header off a Fernandes corner 3:39 later pushed the
advantage to three.
Raymond completed the first-half scoring with the first of her two
goals at 27:07, as she caught up to a Muse cross from the right
side to the far post for the finish. Just 1:53 into the
second frame, Raymond struck again, this time firing a shot from
the right flank into the upper left corner of the net.
Junior Tori
Howland (Red Hook, NY) paced the Engineers with two
shots, while four others had one in the contest.
Lyon junior goalie Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI)
made two first-half stops in a game where Wheaton held a 30-6 shot
advantage while taking all five corners. Willer finished with
12 saves in the loss.
Wheaton steps out of league play Sunday for a 1pm match at Husson
University. WPI hosts UMass-Boston under the lights Thursday
at 7pm.
