Chicopee, MA --- Freshman Chris
Ciampa (Danvers, MA) netted a hat trick and classmate
Jeff
Wong (Long Hill, NJ) registered a shutout in his first
collegiate game in goal to power WPI to a 3-0 victory over host
Elms in a non-conference men's soccer contest played Wednesday
afternoon. With the win, the Engineers snap a four-game
losing skid and improve to 4-5 while Elms dips to 0-8-1 on the
season.
Ciampa unleashed a one-man scoring spree in the 18th minute as
he tallied markers 43 seconds apart. He got the Engineers on
the board at 17:16 when he buried a rebound by senior Mike Ford
(Whitman, MA) and helped the Crimson and Gray double their
advantage at 17:59 when Ford sent him in alone on net for a
breakaway goal.
Ciampa concluded the scoring early in the second half as he
scored off a pass from Kevin
Ducharme (Bedford, NH) at 56:17. The freshman
now has six goals on the season, tying him for second in the
NEWMAC.
Wong turned away three shots while earning the win for WPI
between the pipes. Kyle Powers
(Hamilton, NJ) helped preserve the shutout by clearing a ball off
the line in the 52nd minute. Ryan Sullivan
(Agawam, MA) was strong in net for Elms, making 12 stops.
Nzigamasa Jonathan (Springfield, MA) led the
offensive charge for the Blazers with two shots.
