Worcester, MA --- Junior Karly Henderson's
(Salem, MA) goal in the 17th minute highlighted Salem State's 2-0
road victory over WPI in non-conference women's soccer action from
a sun-soaked Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. With the
result, the Vikings improve to 1-0-1 on the young season while WPI
falls to 0-2.
SSU dented the scored column at 16:22 when Jackie
Gauthier (Danvers, MA) feed Henderson, who buried a shot
in the top right hand corner of the net from just inside the
18-yard box. The Vikings added to their advantage in the 31st
minute as they was aided by an own goal as the ball deflected off a
WPI defender and across the goal line.
WPI's best scoring chance came in the 58th minute when
Kelly
Ames (Glastonbury, CT) passed the ball to Kristen
Garza (Kingston, MA), whose flick on goal forced
Viking netminder Leah Potcner (Wilmington, MA) to
make a diving save. The stop was the only save of the
day for Potcner, who was credited with the shutout.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY) made four saves for WPI, who was
outshot on the day 11-4, but enjoyed a 4-3 edge in corner
kicks.
WPI concludes a brief two-game homestand on Tuesday, when its
hosts Gordon at 4:30pm. The game is the front end of a
doubleheader at Alumni Field with Field Hockey (vs Bridgewater
State - 7pm). Salem State returns home Wednesday for a 6pm
contest against Babson.
