Worcester, MA --- Gordon sophomore Karina Scavo
(Mount Siani, NY) assisted on two goals, including the game-winner
with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, to give the
Fighting Scots a dramatic 2-1 win Tuesday afternoon over WPI at
Alumni Field. With the victory, Gordon improves to 3-0, while
WPI drops to 0-3.
The Fighting Scots held a 6-1 shot advantage in the first
half, but only one crossed the goal line as when Hala
Coker (East Falmouth, MA) connected on a setup by Scavo
following a corner kick in the 28th minute. WPI's best
scoring chance of the half came in the 16th minute when Kayla
Rayworth's (West Boylston, MA) laser was stopped by
Gordon keeper Kari Christenson (Standish,
ME).
WPI evened the match at 59:38 when freshman Courtney
Langley (Fairfield, ME) successfully converted a
penalty kick after junior Hailey
Taylor (Colusa, CA) was fouled inside the box.
Gordon's
Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, VT) took
matters into her own hands with just under five minutes left in the
game, firing a rocket that was stopped by WPI keeper
Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY). The subsequent rebound
was pushed by Scavo back to Nedde, who deposited the ball softly
into the upper left corner. WPI has a quality scoring chance
in the last two minutes, but
Kristen Garza's
(Kingston, MA)
shot was turned away by Christenson.
Christenson improves to 3-0 on the season after making four
saves, while WPI freshman goalkeeper Maddie
Willer (Penfield, NY) made five saves. The
tightly contested matchup saw Gordon own a 10-6 edge in shots and
both teams take three corner kicks.
The Engineers look to pick up a victory when they travel to
regional power Western Connecticut for a 6pm matchup Thursday
night. Gordon begins Commonwealth Coast Conference action
when they venture to Regis on Saturday for a noon contest.
